Does Liposuction Permanently Remove Belly Fat?

Diet- and exercise-resistant fat can be a big source of frustration for many people. Sometimes, no matter how hard you work and how strict you are with your diet, stubborn fat refuses to disappear, and liposuction is a great option to help people finally achieve their ideal body contours. Generally, people who invest in liposuction do so because they have been unsuccessful at getting rid of stubborn fat with diet and exercise alone. Naturally, then, people wonder whether liposuction will permanently remove belly fat. The short answer is yes. However, this is an oversimplification of long-term liposuction results. Board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Bryan S. Armijo answers this question and explains how you can maintain the results of your liposuction in Dallas, TX.

What is Liposuction, and How Does It Work?

Liposuction has been helping individuals achieve their ideal body contouring goals since the 1980s. Though a nutritious diet and regular exercise are always recommended to reach and maintain a healthy weight, these habits don’t always get rid of the stubborn fatty tissue clinging to the skin’s surface. If you’re close to your ideal weight but struggling to lose that last bit of weight, liposuction can help!

How does it work?

During liposuction treatment, Dr. Armijo will first use a numbing method to ensure patients remain comfortable. The type of numbing method used depends on the patient’s preferences and the amount of fat that needs to be removed. Dr. Armijo can use general or local anesthesia, which he will determine during your initial consultation.

Once the treatment area is numb, Dr. Armijo will use one of two techniques: Tumescent liposuction and laser-assisted liposuction. During tumescent, or suction, liposuction, Dr. Armijo will inject a sterile solution consisting of anesthetic and epinephrine that causes the belly fat to become numb and slightly swollen. Then, he will insert a thin tube called a cannula into the patient’s fatty tissue through a small incision called a keyhole. The patient’s unwanted fat is then prepared for removal before being strategically suctioned out.

With laser-assisted liposuction, Dr. Armijo will use a thin fiber that emits laser energy directly into the fatty tissue, liquifying it for easier removal. Laser-assisted liposuction is less invasive because it doesn’t require the adipose tissue to be manually dislodged before its removal. Laser-assisted liposuction also adds the benefit of tightening the skin and stimulating collagen production.

Does Liposuction Guarantee Permanent Fat Removal?

The results from liposuction are intended to be a permanent solution to getting rid of diet-resistant belly fat. Once the fat cells are extracted from your treatment area, they will be gone for good. It is important to note, though, that new fat cells can grow over time.

Can Fat Return After Liposuction Surgery?

Yes. Pregnancy and unforeseen weight gain can cause new fat cells to grow in the treated area. The best way to maintain your results from liposuction is simple: exercise regularly, maintain a nutrient-rich diet, and keep your body hydrated.

What Lifestyle Changes Are Needed After Liposuction For Long-Term Results?

Many people consider liposuction after years of unsuccessfully getting rid of stubborn fat with diet and exercise. Diet- and exercise-resistant fat can cause mental and emotional anguish. Because liposuction is not a weight-loss treatment but rather a targeted body-contouring treatment, you will need to do your best to maintain a stable weight. In short, a few great ways to maintain long-term results are:

  • Exercise regularly
  • Eat a balanced diet
  • Stay hydrated

Lifestyle choices are ultimately yours. You know what it takes to live well and be healthy, and liposuction is an investment in your self-confidence. Ask for help if you need it, and stay committed to yourself and your wellness. This commitment probably got you here in the first place. Keep that up.

Choosing the Best Liposuction Surgeon For Your Goals

When choosing a plastic surgeon to perform your liposuction procedure, make sure you choose someone board-certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Board certification ensures that the provider adheres to the highest education, training, ethics, and safety protocols. Your plastic and reconstructive surgeon should be proud of their work and happy to provide numerous before and after photos. Additionally, it’s important to choose someone whose values and practice philosophy align with your personal philosophy.

Plastic and reconstructive surgery is as much an art as it is a science, and choosing a board-certified provider who is as tuned into aesthetics as he is clinical skills will help ensure results you’ll love.

Board-certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon Dr. Bryan Armijo has built a reputation because of his surgical excellence and compassion.
