Immediately following the patient’s skin sparing mastectomy by her breast surgeon, Dr. Armijo performed the first stage of reconstruction with the placement of tissue expanders. Unfortunately, her breast surgeon had to take the patient back to surgery for re-excision of positive margins, and her left tissue expander had to be removed at that time. The patient subsequently underwent several rounds of radiation on her left side. Once the patient completed radiation, Dr. Armijo removed the right tissue expander and performed bilateral DIEP flap breast reconstruction, using the skin and fat from her tummy to reconstruct her breast mounds. She opted to get nipple tattoos in lieu of surgical nipple reconstruction.
