How to Prepare and What to Expect After Juvéderm

Juvéderm is a great treatment to help eliminate lines and creases around the mouth, nose, and forehead, as well as improve the appearance of pitted acne scars. It is also used to augment and enhance the size and shape of the lips. Now that you’ve decided to give it a try and go forward with treatments, you might be wondering how best you can prepare and what to expect from treatments.

Read on to learn a few ways that you can prepare for you treatments and what to expect to help make your appointment go as smooth as possible.

What Is Juvéderm?

Juvéderm is a hyaluronic acid filler, a natural substance found in the skin that is responsible for hydration and keeping the skin supple and plump. For this reason, there is low risk of allergic reaction when it is reintroduced back into the skin through dermal fillers. As we age, our body’s production of natural hyaluronic acid vastly diminishes leaving our skin exposed to more lines and crease. Juvéderm replenishes the hyaluronic acid lost due to the aging process.

Preparing For Juvéderm Treatments

One week before treatment, stop taking common pain relievers such as Motrin or Advil, or any products that contain NSAIDs. These common medications have multiple effects on the body, including blocking platelets. When platelets in the blood are prohibited from sealing capillaries that are disturbed by injectables, this can increase the appearance of bruising.

Avoid certain foods and beverages prior to your treatment, including the following:

  • Alcoholic beverages
  • Salmon
  • Mackerel
  • Chai seeds
  • Assorted nuts

Stop All supplements

There are several supplements, including vitamin E, fish oil, and green tea, that thin the blood in ways that are similar to prescribed medications. Many vitamins and herbal supplements can have unpredictable effects when used before cosmetic treatments. For this reason, we urge you to pause consumption of these supplements for at least a week prior to your treatment.

Avoid topical irritants

For two days before your treatment, you should stop using all topical anti-aging ointments, serums, and creams that contain harsh chemicals, including glycolic acid, retinoids, retinol, and Retin-A. These can irritate the skin and negatively impact treatment outcomes.

Also, to protect your skin and your results, for two days prior to your treatment, do not tweeze, bleach, or wax hair that is on or near the treatment site. Also avoid hair removal creams, which commonly contain harsh chemicals.

What to Expect After a Juvéderm Treatment

Most patients see improvements quickly and only need one appointment to attain excellent results. Juvéderm can smooth lines and wrinkles for up to 18 months, depending on the area being treated and the injector’s skill level. There may be some minor bruising and swelling after the injections, but this will dissipate on its own within a week. To have the best chance of avoiding minor risks, patients should avoid strenuous exercise, excessive sun or heat exposure, and consumption of alcoholic beverages.
