Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Gynecomastia Surgery

It’s incredibly common to hear about women who undergo procedures to alter their breast size and shape, but what about men?

Gynecomastia can be a troubling condition that refers to enlarged male breast tissue. It’s a condition that can cause many men to feel too self-conscious about their chests to go shirtless on the beach, wear a tight fitted shirt, or even hug friends and family members; but what they don’t know is that a plastic surgeon can actually reverse gynecomastia with male breast reduction surgery.

Here is everything about gynecomastia that you could want to know!

What is Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is an endocrine disorder in which there is swelling in male breast tissue. The cause of gynecomastia can be attributed to a hormone imbalance where there is a higher percentage of estrogen than average. During puberty, boys’ bodies mainly produce testosterone and only a little bit of estrogen, but when testosterone levels are lower than normal, the higher estrogen can stimulate the male breast tissue to swell up.

Causes of Gynecomastia

We’ve discussed the cause of gynecomastia being from a hormone imbalance, but that isn’t always the case. Gynecomastia can also be caused by medical conditions like obesity, malnutrition, liver disease, hyperthyroidism, hypogonadism, prostate cancer, and kidney failure. It can also be an unfortunate side effect of drugs like marijuana or heroin, prescription medications, and even herbals.

Surgical Treatment for Gynecomastia

While gynecomastia doesn’t cause medical concerns, male breast reduction surgery or gynecomastia surgery is on the rise to help resolve the aesthetic and psychological impacts of the condition. At Bryan. S. Armijo MD, board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Bryan Armijo uses advanced techniques to carefully excise excess breast tissue. Dr. Armijo employs liposuction, surgery, or a combination of both, depending on the amount of tissue in the breasts.

If the tissue is mostly fatty, then Dr. Armijo will mostly likely remove the tissue with liposuction through a small incision in the nipple or underarm areas.

If there is an excessive amount of glandular tissue, excision surgery may be performed, which requires more extensive surgery.

Recovery From Gynecomastia Surgery

After breast reduction surgery, patients will usually be allowed to return home the same day. Dr. Armijo will monitor your recovery carefully to ensure that you are comfortable and healing properly. Some swelling and discomfort are normal after surgery and can be managed through pain medication and compression garments worn for 4-6 days after surgery. You’ll be able to return to work once you feel well enough to do so but should avoid any strenuous activity for a week or two while you heal.
